AI Can’t Build You a Decent Website, Yet

There’s an AI tool for everything these days.

Every single tech startup and online business is adding “AI” in their name and product description. The power of artificial intelligence is awesome, but there are still plenty of limitations.

I scrolled across a Twitter post promoting an AI-powered website builder. I’ve seen many people talk about the tool, so I figured it was time to test it out. And I could try it for free.

The post said, “Building a website used to take ages. But with AI you can create a website in seconds. Here’s how to create any website for free using AI.”

That’s a big promise.

I’m skeptical of AI promotions that say anything like: “Do xyz in seconds!”

Of all the AI tools I’ve used, it takes at least a few minutes to produce anything of good quality. Thankfully, the website builder site says, “Generate your website in minutes with AI” and not seconds. It might sound nitpicky, but there’s a big difference between spending 20 minutes on something vs 30 seconds.

My original plan was to create a website for my newsletter.

When asked what I wanted the website for, newsletter wasn’t an option. Boo.

I picked the Writer category, but the follow-up questions didn’t make sense, because I wanted to create something newsletter related. I started over and chose to create an eCommerce store.

I entered some basic information, like the business name and description.

That took ~5 minutes. I click Create and 45 seconds later I’ve got a website.

It looks fine, but it also looked very familiar.

It’s the same exact website that I saw in the Twitter post.
