I started a local service business last year (mobile car detailing) and despite doing SEO for the past 5 years, I didn’t optimize my own business for months. In my defense, I started the business to get away from the computer screen.

I did the bare minimum — created a Google My Business profile and social media profiles. There were some obvious things that I should’ve done on Day 1 that would’ve improved my organic rankings.

After spending a couple of hours on the basics, I’m getting some traction.

Nothing crazy — but better than nothing.

I’m going to share the five things you can do to improve the search presence for a local business. The great news is that anyone can do these things — no SEO experience required (even though it’s helpful;)

Invest in your business listings

The first thing you need to do is create the basic business listings.

  • Create a Google My Business profile
  • Create Facebook and Instagram pages
